Information about first generation computers

First generation computer
These are developed during 1946 to 1955 and were built with Vacuum tubes. There data processing speed of 10^(-3) seconds. They had limited primary memory in these switches and wire plug boards were used to execute the program. Magnetic drum as secondary storage devices. They were very expensive to operate and in addition to using a great deel of electricity generated a lot of heat with was of on the case of malfunctions. The major dis-advantage of these computers are bigger in size slowly in operation high cost.

Features/Advantages of First generation computer

  • Used Vacuum Tubes for the electronic components.
  • The Medium of internal storage was magnetic drum.
  • They were quiet large and required a lot of space of Installation.
  • They were very expensive.
  • They were non-portable & very slow equipment.
  • Fast and more powerful then any of their predecessors.
  • These machines are unreliable and port to frequent hardware failures.
Dis-advantages/De-merits of First generation computer
  • Short life span
  • High maintenance cost 
  • slow operating speed
  • generating lot of heat 
  • less capability 
  • large in size
  • Consumed lot of power
